That day, 23-year-old Kayla Speer was cooking up a scheme to catch her cheating boyfriend in the act. But since she couldn't do it alone and her friends were all busy, she decided to ask the delivery driver for help.
After hearing Kayla's story, the delivery driver felt sorry for her and offered his help. Little did he know what he was getting himself into.
They Were In A Long Distance Relationship
Kayla lived in West Burlington, Iowa, and her boyfriend lived a few hours away from her.
They had been in a long-distance relationship for five months before Kayla found out the hard-to-swallow truth.
It Was Their Second Year Anniversary
On their second year anniversary, Kayla decided to do something special for her boyfriend. But her kindness backfired in the most unexpected way.
She knew that he was studying for his finals and wanted to surprise him with a delicious sandwich from the sub shop.
She Wanted To Do Something Nice For Him
“I was at work one evening and thought I would do something nice for my bf and order him @jimmyjohns for dinner while he was studying for finals,” she wrote on Twitter.
But that delivery ended up turning her life upside down.
She Ordered Him A Sub
"I called the Jimmy John's in his city, and I said, 'Hey, this is for the guy I'm dating,'" Kayla told BuzzFeed News.
But there was one huge problem with her order.
She Asked Him To Be His Wingman
Since Kayla used her card to buy the sandwich, she had to be the one to sign the slip. So she wanted to ask the shop if her boyfriend could sign it instead.
In her Twitter post, Kayla explained how she convinced a sandwich delivery guy to be her wingman, but he had no idea what he was in for when he agreed to help her.
She Texted Him
She ended up ruining her own surprise when she texted her boyfriend, saying, "Hey, food is on the way for you. Please leave a tip."
But it was the delivery guy who found himself in a very uncomfortable situation.
Oops...
"I didn't get a text back right away. But a little bit before, he'd said he was going to take a nap and then keep studying," she told BuzzFeed.
Fifteen minutes later she received a call, but it wasn't from her boyfriend.
He Was Cheating On Her
It was the delivery guy who was calling.
"We thought you should know that when we walked up to your boyfriend's apartment, we were able to see inside, and we saw him with another woman naked on the couch," the delivery guy told Kayla.
She Didn't Believe Him
The delivery guy was able to see his room through a large window on his door. But Kayla didn't believe him at first, so she asked him a few more questions to confirm that the man he saw was, in fact, her boyfriend.
After all, it could've been someone else.
It Was Awkward
"Honestly, it was so awkward. I just wanted to get out of there, so I just gave him the sandwich and left," the delivery guy told her.
Kayla immediately called her boyfriend and demanded an explanation.
She Was Hurt
"I was like, 'Jimmy John's just told me the situation,' And he tried to make up a lie, saying, 'It wasn't me,' but it was," Kayla wrote on Twitter.
That phone call with the delivery guy left her upset, but she was glad that he had been honest with her.
She Broke Up With Him
She broke up with her cheating boyfriend and never spoke to him again.
But there was someone she needed to thank, so she shared her story on Twitter with the world. Would the delivery guy see her post?
The Store Messaged Her
The sandwich store commented under her post saying, “KAYLA!! I’d love to cater for your breakup party! Let me know when and where! Please DM me your address and contact info, and I’ll make it happen!”
Kayla messaged the store and assured them that she would let them know which day she planned to have the breakup party.
She Was Thankful
"We're freaks about everything we do, from our products to our process. And customer service is no exception," said the store's chief marketing officer.
Kayla doesn't know who the delivery guy is, so she never got the chance to thank him. "Most people wouldn’t do what he did,” she said. “And that’s awesome that he did."
