A New Apparition
When the expert got to the site of the sinkhole, he couldn't believe his eyes. The man was stumped. He had never seen anything like this before.
A massive sinkhole had appeared in a Chilean field, leaving the authorities puzzled. No one knew why and how it formed in that location. All they knew was that they had to do something about it.
An Ambitious Scientist
Javier Martinez was an amazing environmental scientist who dealt with many difficult cases throughout his career. Due to the recent droughts and deforestation, he always had a lot on his plate.
But nothing prepared him for what he was about to discover at the site of this Chilean field. Few could anticipate something like that to happen.
A Life Of Science
Ever since he was a little boy, Javier had taken an interest in science. He loved building things and always had a nature book in his hands.
When it was time to pick his high school, Javier chose a science one. When he went to university, the young man decided to go for environmental science, as he wanted to make a difference in the local ecosystem. But all his education didn't prepare him for what he encountered decades later.
Difficult Upbringing
Javier's life was a difficult one. He grew up in a poor family, and his parents couldn't afford to buy him and his siblings whatever they wanted.
And whenever it was his birthday or a holiday, Javier always wanted the same thing: a book. He always studied the mysteries of nature, and it was as if he had prepared all his life to become an environmental scientist.
Unsettling Situations
Due to the nature of his job, Javier had to deal with a lot of tough situations. During his time as an environmental scientist, he had to take care of cases that weren't easy.
There were times when he was called to restore entire areas or figure out plans to help a forest recover. It wasn't always easy, and at times, people's lives were at stake. Chile has a drought problem, and Javier also had to figure out how to deal with it at times.
Always Finding A Solution
Javier was the type of person that never backed down. Due to the corruption in Chile, he often received threats when he pushed for the protection of a certain area or body of water.
But the scientist considered that a part of the job. He was used to fighting a brutal fight and wasn't planning on letting any corrupt entity or person get their way.
Disturbing Call
The National Service of Geology and Mining, a Chilean government agency, had called Javier's organization to ask for assistance on a recent and urgent matter.
A disturbing occurrence materialized in a field on the top of a mine, and no one had any explanation of how it happened. It was something they had never seen before.
Heading To The Site
Javier assembled a team, gathered his equipment, and headed to the site of the strange apparition. As a scientist, he was both worried and excited.
When they got there, some crew from the Chilean government was already there and warned them to be careful. Even the television was there. But Javier was no stranger to danger and was prepared for almost anything. He wasn't prepared for this one, though.
A Sinkhole
When Javier and his crew realized they were dealing with a massive sinkhole, their hearts almost stopped. This never happened before in their careers. Not on this scale, at least.
They tried to inspect it from afar, but Javier knew in his heart that he needed to get closer to figure out what was going on.
What To Do
Javier had never faced anything like this in his entire career as an environmental scientist. His crew was stumped as well. The government's crew was completely lost.
The experts on site knew they had to do something about it, so no one would get hurt. But what could be done in such a dangerous situation? The sinkhole was incredibly big in diameter.
Massive Size
The sinkhole was massive. It was estimated to be about 105 feet wide which was about as long as a basketball court. It was quite big, and it was located in a tricky place.
The massive sinkhole was located near a mining site in northern Chile and appeared out of nowhere. No one knew of any seismic activity or something that could trigger such an event.
Taking Measures
After learning of its detection, authorities immediately went to the site for safety response and to investigate the sinkhole. The action time was fantastic. Soon after, Javier's crew was deployed to the site as well.
Both Lundin Mining, the company in charge of the nearby mine, and the experts on site confirmed that the sinkhole did not impact the people, equipment, or facilities that were both inside and near the surface of the Alcaparrosa mine.
What Was Inside
But the big question on Javier's mind was what was inside the hole and how deep it was. And he wasn't the only one who wondered the same thing.
After investigating it more, they relayed that there was a considerable distance of approximately 656 feet to the bottom. They hadn't detected any material down there, but they had seen the presence of a lot of water for some reason.
Not The Only One
This was not the only massive sinkhole to suddenly appear. In another part of the world, another sinkhole emerged.
One man was pulled inside a sinkhole at a party in Karmei Yosef, a town about 25 miles outside Tel Aviv, when it opened under a swimming pool. The couple who owned the property was arrested for not inspecting the plot enough before building their pool.
Making The News
While investigators were still working to determine the cause of the sinkhole, some folks on Twitter had chimed in with their own theories.
Afterward, it didn't take long for the event to make the news, and suddenly the story was all over social media. The entire world knew about it, and everyone wondered why it had appeared. In order to protect the privacy of those depicted, some names, locations, and identifying characteristics have been changed and are products of the author's imagination. Any resemblances to actual events or places or persons, living or dead, are entirely coincidental.
