Samantha Hartsoe was a 26-year-old woman renting an apartment with two roommates in New York. It was spacious and newly renovated. However, there was something the previous tenants didn't mention to the girls.
The mirror in the bathroom was no ordinary mirror. And it would turn their lives into a living nightmare.
Social Media User
Samantha was an active social media user and especially liked using TikTok. She shared her story about the creepy mirror in four separate videos on the platform as she filmed herself trying to get to the bottom of this mystery.
It all began when she went on a hiking trip in the woods.
Cold Wind
As soon as Samantha arrived home from her hike, she immediately knew something was amiss. Although all of the windows in the apartment were closed, she could feel a cold wind blowing all around her.
And when she entered the bathroom to wash her hands, it was freezing cold in there. How was this possible?
Strange Phenomena
"That's weird," she thought. "I don't have a vent that blows cold air." Her roommates weren't home, and Samantha began to feel scared. She filmed the strange phenomena and uploaded the video to Tik Tok, hoping to get some answers.
The 26-year-old recorded her hair moving, noticing how strong the wind was. While the first video was a bit creepy, it was the second one that stunned everyone.
The Video
Samantha's Tik Tok video started with her standing in the entranceway to her bathroom wearing her pajamas. She was confused about the strong wind in the house. She checked for the source of the cold air but didn't notice anything suspicious.
She pointed at the door and said she could feel the wind coming from there. Where was it coming from?
Searching For The Source
Samantha searched her entire bathroom but didn't find any holes in the walls. She realized that the cold air was getting colder the closer she got to the bathroom mirror.
She put her hands near the mirror, and the realization hit her: the cold air was coming from behind the mirror.
Investigating
In her second Tik Tok video, Samantha told the other two girls that she had discovered something in the bathroom, and they all went inside to investigate. She showed her roommates that their bathroom mirror wasn't attached to the wall, so she could easily take it off.
They weren't prepared for what they would find behind the mirror.
A Huge Hole In The Wall
When Samantha took off the mirror, she realized it wasn't backed by plaster. Instead, there was a massive hole in the wall leading to a dark space.
She immediately thought of the movie Candyman and nearly screamed. But, little did she know, this was just the beginning.
Theories
At first, the girls couldn't see anything through the hole. Their first thought was that it could be the homeowner's secret room that he tried to hide with a bathroom mirror.
Could he be spying on them through the hole while they showered? Or could it be something even worse?
Curiosity Killed The Cat
Samantha was determined to find out what was inside the secret room. “Curiosity killed the cat; curiosity is going to kill me,” she said in an interview.
“I can’t not know what’s on the other side of my bathroom.” Samantha put on a facemask and grabbed a flashlight. Then, she got a hammer just in case and stepped inside.
Mean It When You Swing It
“Mean it when you swing it,” her roommate told her as she entered the hole. Samantha's roommates weren't brave enough to go with her, so she went in alone.
Samantha thought she would be safe with a hammer in her hand, but she was wrong.
In Trouble
Samantha climbed into the hole and dropped onto the floor but instantly realized that she wouldn't be able to climb back up.
“I have to go back through that hole, which is pretty much impossible, or I have to find the exit of this place, which means I have to – at this point – explore it all,” she explained later.
A Toilet
“There’s a room back here!” Samatha shouted. She walked around with only a beam from the flashlight to guide her way when she noticed something else in the pitch-dark space.
There was a toilet and a few trash bags! Was someone living there?
A Sign Of Life
Inside the secret apartment, Samatha found a few open windows and more trash bags. She even saw an empty water bottle, which she called a “sign of life.”
The presence of the secret apartment still remains a mystery to this day. "I was kind of expecting there to be somebody, especially with the water bottle being there," Samantha recalled. "And that definitely put me on edge."
