The Deadliest Natural Disasters That Struck During Recent Years

No matter how much technology is going to advance, there is something that we will never be able to control and that is mother Nature. There’s nothing that someone can do when a natural disaster is on the way other to simply pack up and leave the area as soon as possible. There have been lots of devastating natural disasters during this past couple of years and if you want to learn more about the most terrifying ones, then you have arrived at the right place because today we are going to show you the deadliest natural disasters that happened during recent years.

We are going to kick things off with the Haitian Earthquake. This was one of the world’s worst earthquakes to ever be recorded and it struck on January 2010. The earthquake hit the west side of Port-Au-Prince which is Haiti’s capital.

According to scientists, the Haitian Earthquake measured in at 7.0 on the Richter scale. To make things even more terrifying, the Haitian Earthquake had 52 aftershocks which started at 4.5 on the Richter scale and then got bigger.

The number of people that died during the Haitian Earthquake will shock you!

Multiple news publications have reported that an estimated 230,000 lost their lives during the Haitian Earthquake.

Not just that, but around 300,000 people were injured during the earthquake and more than one million became homeless because the earthquake destroyed their homes.

Tsunamis are some of the worst natural disasters that can happen and people who live in India experienced this first hand back in 20014. The Indian Ocean Tsunami is considered to be the deadliest tsunami ever and it was caused by an Earthquake of magnitude 9 Mw.

This happened on December 26 in 20014.

The earthquake that started the Indian Ocean Tsunami ejected such an incredible amount of power that scientists have said it was equal to 23,000 atom bombs fired at the same time. Now, this is super scary!

To make things even worse, more than 150,000 people lost their lives after the tsunami struck.

The Kashmir earthquake struck back in 2005 and it’s one of the most terrifying natural disasters to ever happen.

The earthquake that hit Pakistan had a magnitude of 7.6 and the center was in Muzaffarabad which is the Capital of Pakistan Administrated Kashmir.

Since the 2005 Kashmir earthquake was so powerful, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that surrounding areas were damaged by it as well.

The earthquake also damaged Islamabad (capital of Pakistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa alongside Kashmir.

According to the Pakistan government, more than 100,000 people have lost their lives in the earthquake and over 70,000 people were injured.

The sad thing about this is that a total of four million people became homeless since the earthquake took away their homes and everything else that they have worked for all their lives.

Even though you might think that a heat wave is not as deadly as an earthquake or a tsunami, the heatwave can do some serious damage as well.

Just take for example the 2003 European heat wave which took the lives of more than 70,000 people who live in Europe.

France, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Spain and Italy are the European countries which were affected by the heat wave. Can you guess how high was the hottest temperature during the heat wave?

How do 45 Celsius degrees sound for you? Now, this is super-hot.

Back on December 16h, 1920 one of the world’s biggest earthquakes had struck Haiyuan Country which is located in central china. As you can imagine, people were not prepared for it because no one had phones or TVs back in 1920 so that they could be alerted about the incoming earthquake.

Unfortunately, a total of 273,400 people passed away in the earthquake.

In 2020 a study was presented at a conference that was being hosted in honor of the earthquake’s 90 anniversary and that is where the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the Haiyuan earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8 Mw and it was felt from the Yellow Sea to Qinghai Province which is located on the Tibetan plateau.

Cyclones are terrifying and there is no doubt about that! However, one of the deadliest ones to ever happen struck Myanmar during early May 2008.

The cyclone delivered a storm rush that moved for a total of 40 kilometers. The worst thing about this is that the cyclone was moving through the highly populated Irrawaddy delta.

The cyclone was so powerful that it basically destroyed everything in its path. The cyclone took the lives of more than 138,000 people and wounded more than 80,500 others.

As if this wasn’t enough, more than 55,000 people are still reported missing after the cyclone struck.

When it comes to hurricanes, the most infamous one is hurricane Katrina that struck the United States back in 2005. The hurricane was formed over the Bahamas and it ravaged the Gulf Coast of America.

The scary part about this is that the hurricane crossed paths with a Category 3 storm in Louisiana.

The hurricane destroyed everything in its path and it took tens of thousands of homes away from hardworking people who live from central Florida to Texas.

According to multiple reports, the hurricane caused 81 billion dollars in damages.

Since hurricane Katrina did so much damage back in 2005, it shouldn’t come as a shock to find out that the government is still rebuilding the buildings and streets that the hurricane destroyed to this day.

On 26 January 2001, a 7.7 Mw earthquake hit Gujarat which is a district from India. The earthquake was so powerful that it also affected some areas in Bangladesh!

More than 400,000 people lost their homes during this natural disaster.

What’s the most terrifying thing about a 9.0 Mw earthquake? The fact that it can be followed by a massive tsunami.

Sadly, this is exactly what happened in Tohoku, Japan in 2011. This is one of the world’s worst natural disasters and millions of buildings were destroyed.

Even though most people think of sand when they hear Afghanistan, the location can also have freezing cold temperatures. Back in 2008, a record-breaking blizzard hit Afghanistan and it lowered the temperature to -30 Celsius degrees.

Almost half a million animals died during this period and more than 1,000 people lost their lives.
