Messed Up Plotlines From Kids Animated Shows

Questionable Scenes

A lot of adults have rewatched some of their favorite childhood shows and discovered how questionable their plot points really were.

Let's look at some of the strangest and most outrageous scenes or plot points from otherwise harmless kids' shows. Number seven is one you will never forget

Powerpuff Girls

Powerpuff Girls is notorious for crossing the line a few times during its run, but there is one episode that stands out from the rest.

Buttercup starts going out with the leader of the 'Gangreen Gang'. The show never mentions his age, but it's safe to assume that he is a bit too old for Buttercup.

Thomas The Tank Engine

Thomas The Tank Engine was extremely popular in its day. Most adults remember this loveable cartoon fondly, but some scenes and episodes were a lot darker than others.

In one episode, Thomas is trapped in a tunnel by a brick wall. He has no track and he only has a small hole to look out of. According to the narrator, he deserves this.

Hey Arnold!

This show follows the protagonist, named Arnold, as he gets up to all kinds of shenanigans around his neighborhood. In the show, he has a love interest named Helga, who has feelings for him too. The catch is, he has no idea that she's in love with him.

In the origin of the story, Arnold is the first person to be kind to her, as a preschooler. Her family are alcoholics and she walks to school in the rain where he offers her an umbrella.

Looney Tunes

One of the lesser-known yet essential characters of Looney Tunes is Mark The Bulldog. One of his episodes takes a darker turn than the rest of them.

In this episode, Mark thinks that a kitten in his care has been baked into a cookie, the shock and horror is evident on his face when he sees the cat-shaped cookie.

Coraline

Coraline is almost equally suitable for adults as it is for kids. The entire movie has a pretty dark undertone.

Coraline's "other mother" offers to give her everything her real parents never could. To get everything she wants, Coraline has to allow her "other mother" to sew buttons into her eyes. Now that's pretty dark.

Neverending Story

Neverending Story is still watched by children to this day. In the story, a young boy named Bastian gets lost in a storybook and finds himself in a completely different world called 'Fantasia'.

One unsettling moment occurs when his horse, Artaz, gets stuck in the Swamp of Sadness' mud. The mud ends up consuming the horse. It's a truly heartbreaking scene.

Scooby-Doo

Scooby-Doo has remained a favorite for decades and it doesn't seem like that will end anytime soon. But there was one episode that didn't have its usual twist at the end.

In one episode, a mummy chases the gang in a scene that is truly scary for any child. To make things worse, the mummy's mask isn't taken off at the end. Usually, the mask would be taken off to show kids that there was nothing to be afraid of, but not in this episode. Kids are left terrified.

The Wizard Of Oz

The oldest movie on this list, everyone recognizes The Wizard Of Oz. Every child loves this show! But one scene is a bit too dark.

The Wicked Witch Of The West lets out a terrifying screaming when they melt her down with water. Now, that could even give some adults nightmares!

Spirited Away

Spirited Away has a lot of scenes that might not be suitable for children. But the show is meant for young teens. But one of the most unsettling plot points in Chiro's parents.

Her parents are turned into pigs, and if she can't save them in time, they will be slaughtered and eaten. That's quite unsettling!

Coneheads

Coneheads is a comedy that both the kids and the parents can enjoy. With funny and ironic moments with an alien family trying to blend in.

The messed up thing about the movie was when the father goes to the dentist’s office and he shows the inside of his mouth. We get to see three rows of razor sharp teeth. No thanks!

Jumanji

Remember the original Jumanji with one of our favorite actors Robin Williams? The movie started it all and was both hilarious and fun to boot.

But there’s one scene where a giant plant monster shoots a big needle into someone’s neck. We only realized how bad it actually was when we rewatched it years later.

Watership Down

Watership Down is a wonderfully animated movie back when everything was hand-drawn. But there was one ominous scene that seemed a little out of place.

There’s a scene with a dark tunnel and a rabbit looking down it. All we hear is the “thump” of a heartbeat getting louder and louder. Certainly distressing, to say the least.

Goonies

Goonies is a great kids movie that follows three kids seeking treasure. They get into trouble and are chased by people that also want the treasure.

But the scariest thing about this film is when they reveal Sloth locked up all alone. His face is definitely messed up enough to fuel any kid’s nightmares.

Matilda

Matilda is yet another amazing movie that came out in the 90s. It follows a young girl who’s exceptionally bright but overlooked by her parents. The same can be said for the headmistress of her school.

There’s a scene in the movie when Matilda and her teacher, Ms. Honey, are hiding from the headmistress in her house. Hearing her footsteps as they hide really does feel like something out of a horror movie.
