Play Ball! Photographer Reimagines Ballerinas As Baseball Players

"I mainly wanted to show the athleticism, skill and power of dancers and combine it with a sport not associated with dance," Meadows said.

Local dancers Maggie Campbell, Sarah Becker and Cali Essick participated in the photoshoot with Meadows, made possible by Ballparks of America in Branson, Mo.

Meadows said that he's been shooting dancers in his town for the past 10 years, including all various styles, but specifically thought of mixing sports and dance a few years ago.

"I'm awed by the dedication, desire, concentration, strength, focus, and unwavering commitment to excellence in the dancers I've known over the years," he said.

After a successful football-inspired shoot, "Touchdowns and Tutus," he worked up an idea to celebrate Opening Day with dance — but mostly to highlight how athletic dancers truly are.

"If athletes/sportsmen think dance is a 'sissy sport,' then I would invite them to go to some dance practices and rehearsals and work out with the dancers," he said.

"We'll see who lasts the longest."

Meadows said he loves shooting all forms of dance, but ballet is by far his favorite.

He said: "To see them press through pain, injuries and overwhelming circumstances to pursue perfection in their art is a humbling experience."

Usually, though, he photographs weddings, events and pageant along with commercial and portfolio work.

But shooting dancers is his favorite pastime.

"I have a passion for shooting dance more than any other subject and would be a dream job just to travel around the country and world capturing the beauty of dance in all its forms," he said.

"It's more of a hobby for me and fun for the dancers to get some artistic images for themselves."

Meadows said he first started taking photos when he got his first camera while serving in the Army in 1973.

He's been shooting as professional full time for a decade.

He said he was first inspired to shoot dancers by professional dance photographer Richard Calmes, whose work has been featured in national magazines.

With more dancer projects on the way, Meadows doesn't plan to slow down any time soon.

He says he has another combination photo shoot idea in the works with his trusty dancers.
