When two actors co-star in a movie together, people often wonder if there’s anything going on behind the camera. Are they just really good actors, or is that chemistry real? Was that onscreen kiss a little too convincing? Over the years, there’s been a lot of movies that have caused problems for celebrity marriages.
Celebrities have become experts at avoiding confrontation regarding the truth, especially if that means new romances with their co-stars. Generally, when celebrities get divorced, it’s not a pretty sight. There’s always going to be drama.
When Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor starred in Cleopatra in 1961, the two didn’t get along at all. They would call each other names and seemed genuine when they said that they didn’t like each other. But when it was time for their big kiss onscreen, the two kept kissing even after the director called cut.
The only problem was that both of them were married. Burton’s wife was Sybil Williams and Eddie Fisher was Taylor’s husband. The two divorced their spouses to be together and were happily married for ten years before getting a divorce, then remarrying a year later only to divorce again soon after.
It’s fair to assume that it was Mr. & Mrs. Smith that had something to do with the marital problems that Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt faced. While Aniston said that the divorce was due to “irreconcilable differences” when she filed for divorce, Pitt said that he had fallen for his co-star on the set of his newest movie at the time.
Angelina could feel the chemistry between the two but didn’t want to catch a married man, ”It took until, really, the end of the shoot for us, I think, to realize that it might mean something more than we’d earlier allowed ourselves to believe,” she said. “And both knowing that the reality of that was a big thing, something that was going to take a lot of serious consideration.”
In his day, Humphrey Bogart was one of the most popular actors in the world. He and his co-star Lauren Bacall were just friends, but when people on the set of To Have and Have Not noticed that they were holding hands. An actor on set named Dan Seymour recalled, ”We knew things were happening. He had that sort of smile you can still see on the screen.”
At the time, Bogart was a married man, his wife was Mayo Methot, who was mentally unstable. He saw his love with Bacall as an escape from his terrible marriage and divorced her soon after the movie came out.
While filming The Outlaw Josey Wales, Clint Eastwood was married to Maggie Johnson. Eastwood started seeing his co-star, Sondra Locke, in a different light and soon the two were having an obvious affair.
Like all of his previous affairs, it ended in resentment and bitterness, but it also ended in the divorce of his wife, Johnson. Locke’s memoir – The Good, the Bad, and the Very Ugly – mentions Eastwood and his affair with her.
Tom Cruise’s marriage to his wife Mimi Rogers was already in hot water before he met his co-star on the set of Days of Thunder. So when Cruise started a love affair with Nicole Kidman, it was the end for his marriage. A month after production started, Cruise had divorced his wife.
Allegedly David Miscavige may have had a role in the divorce too, always arguing with Roger’s father. But whatever the case, Cruise was remarried less than a year later with his co-star, Kidman.
Brad Pitt and Angelina’s marriage was put under strain during the productions of By The Sea. When the movie released Jolie said that the movie was a test of her marriage with Brad. The movie is about a disintegrating relationship but looking at it more there’s probably no hidden meaning.
Either way, just a year after the movie’s release, Jolie filed for divorce. She said that she had a few disagreements when her husband while on set. There were many rumors about Jolie poisoning the marriage during the production of the film.
The Misfits was four years after Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller had gotten married. The two decided to try their hand professionally together and the pressures that came with the movie were too intense for them.
Arthur was a playwright and wrote many blatant sexist scenes that Monroe didn’t like. Monroe’s biography, The Passion and the Paradox, called Miller a “peaceful monster” and said that all of the nice roles in the film went to male actors.
Both Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck both had significant others when they filmed Daredevil together. Garner was wife to Scott Foley while Affleck was in a committed relationship with Jennifer Lopez.
Affleck recalls, ”That’s where I found my wife. We met on Pearl Harbor, which people hate, but we fell in love on Daredevil.” Affleck broke off his engagement to Lopez just one year after the film’s release. Two months after that, Garner divorced Foley, the two could finally be together like they wanted.
Kenneth Branagh was married to Emma Thompsons when he directed and starred in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Even though his marriage to his wife had lasted for five years, he fell for his co-star Helena Bonham Carter. Shortly after his affair was discovered he divorced his wife and has since buried the hatchet with her.
“As Mike Nicholls [the film and theatre director] once said, and I’ve picked it up because I think it’s such a wonderful phrase – all blood under the bridge. You can’t hold on to anything like that. I just think… pfft… It’s pointless. I haven’t got the energy for it. Helena and I made our peace years and years ago.”
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds tried their best to hide their feelings for each other when they starred in Green Lantern. But during production, the two were seen getting familiar with each other in New York.
With all the rumors and speculation, there were serious repercussions for their relationships. Scarlett Johannson divorced Reynolds in 2011 and Lively ended things with Penn Badgley in 2010. By 2012 the co-stars were married.
Rachel Weisz had been partnered with Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky for almost ten years when she began production on Dream House with Daniel Craig. The actor was engaged at the time of filming, but their attraction seemed undeniable.
Neither party claims that Dream House is the reason their respective relationships ended, but Weisz is candid about where she was going wrong before meeting Craig: “I worried about so many things and it was hard for me to feel happy or understand what made me happy. Once you reach your forties, you know where to look.”
Billy Crudup was never married to Mary Louise Parker, but the pair had been partners for eight years. She was also seven months pregnant when he left her for his younger Stage Beauty co-star Claire Danes in 2005.
Parker opened up about her subsequent devastation in her 2015 memoir Dear Mr. You, while Danes has been candid about her part in the affair: “I was just in love with [Crudup], and needed to explore that and I was 24… I didn’t quite know what those consequences would be.”
Teenaged jaws dropped across the country in 2006 when Nick Carter went on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show and claimed that then-girlfriend Paris Hilton had hooked up with Chad Michael Murray while filming House of Wax in 2005. Even more scandalous was the fact that Murray was married to One Tree Hill co-star Sophia Bush at the time. Murray and Bush, who had been married for all of five months when the news broke, quickly separated and then divorced a few months later. In 2014, Bush defended her divorce from Murray while still circumventing the Paris Hilton rumors:
“We were two stupid kids who had no business being in a relationship in the first place. To all the other co-stars who’ve worked it out, more power to you.”
Viewers of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills know Northern Lights all too well. The Lifetime movie created plenty of drama on the reality TV series: on set, Brandi Glanville’s ex-husband Eddie Cibrian cheated on her with LeAnn Rimes.
Shortly after news broke of Cibrian and Rimes hooking up during filming, the two divorced their respective spouses. Cibrian and Rimes tied the knot in 2011.
Titanic director James Cameron and his fourth wife, actress Linda Hamilton, were not married for more than nine months before the famed director fell for actress Suzy Amis. Though the pair stayed together for about two years, Hamilton recalls having a hard time reconciling the relationship. She told The Telegraph, “The parading around, the lunches, the stress of being with Jim during the Titanic days – for years I could barely get make-up on, I was shaking so hard, because every award show we had was terrible.”
Though Hamilton says she was very much in love with her husband at the time, she recalls a lot of behind the scenes stress. Shortly after their divorce, Cameron married Amis, his fifth wife, and they are still together as of 2019.
While filming the kidnapping thriller Proof of Life, Meg Ryan and Russel Crowe were caught cuddling up to one another, consequently ending Ryan’s marriage with Dennis Quaid. Ryan filed for shared custody of their son, Jack, and the pair went their separate ways.
Years later, Jack, who was 8 year old at the time, opened up about the incident. He told Us Weekly, “It’s kind of hard to ignore when you’re at a grocery store and you’re like, checking out and those magazines on the side [feature] a photo of [Ryan and Quaid] with a little paper rip thing. If they hadn’t told me about the divorce, I would’ve been like ‘What’s that?’ as a kid.”
Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott have been married since 2006, but they were both already wed when they met on set for the Lifetime TV movie Mind Over Murder less than a year before they eloped in Fiji. The pair spent the night together the day they met and never looked back.
McDermott has a son with his previous wife, and he and Spelling have had five kids together.
