An Unexpected Discovery
It was a sunny morning in November -quite a stark coincidence! As if the weather was giving a cue for something miraculous to happen. Inside the Page household, Katie was fast asleep when the landline suddenly started ringing. As it was quite an odd hour for someone to call, startled Katie picked up the phone, "Hello?" "Hi! Is this Ms. Katie Page? We have some news for you!" said the voice on the other side of the telephone.
"Yes, who is this?" replied Katie. When the person on the other side spoke again, Katie felt as if lightning had hit her. Katie Page, a young woman hailing from Castle Rock, Colorado had a miraculous journey as a foster mother when she learned that the girl she was fostering, shared the same biological mother as her newly adopted son. However, her journey turned upside down with this terrifying phone call.
Recently divorced
Almost every story that has the potential to blow your mind, has a tragic beginning. Katie Page’s story isn’t very different either. Four years back, she was a divorced woman in her early thirties.
“I was struggling to find my way in life. I knew that the Lord Almighty wanted me to be a different woman. I used to look at myself in the mirror and sob at my condition.” Katie explains her tragic life before the back-to-back miracles happened.
New home
She committed to herself that she would turn her life around and in order to do so, she got a new job and a new home. “I bought myself a ‘fixer upper’ but the house required extensive work. I had to do it myself to make it more affordable.” She explained.
Her new home had 4 large bedrooms. She knew that her home was meant for ‘more’, but she didn’t have any idea at that point in time that she was going to receive a lot MORE than what she was asking for.
Email from pastor
One fine day when she was busy renovating her new home, she received an email from her pastor at her church. “I don’t open these emails on most occasions but that particular email was about an informational session about foster care.”
Katie was intrigued by it because she wanted to know more about foster care. She asked her mother to go along with her. This decision was going to turn her life around completely.
Foster session experience
“That particular session gave me chills and scared me to the core but also, at the same time, it also made my heart pull in a certain way that cannot be expressed into words,” Katie explained.
After she returned from the session, she kept thinking about ways that how could she manage to be a single foster mother while also being a full-time working woman. What would be her decision?
Katie becomes a foster mother
After much contemplation and discussions with people, Katie finally decided to become a foster mother. And she chose just the perfect day to fill out the papers!
“On Mother’s day of 2015, I filled my application and took the next step towards becoming a foster mother.” Katie was delighted to begin her new adventure!
The realization
Just a year after she became a foster mother, a 13-month-old baby boy made her realize one thing. That she wanted a longer-term placement and potentially, she also wanted to adopt a baby forever!
She explained her desire to her caseworker during one of home visits. She had no idea what was coming her way!
The voicemail
Now that she had finally revealed her desire to adopt a child, Katie was patiently waiting to hear from her caseworker’s end.
A couple of weeks later after the caseworker’s visit, she received a voicemail from a caseworker. Katie’s hands were shivering because deep inside she knew, that listening to that voicemail was going to be a huge step in her life!
Abandoned baby boy
Katie finally heard the voicemail. “The caseworker informed me about a baby boy who had been abandoned at the hospital. It was most likely to be a foster-to-adopt situation.” Katie explained the voicemail.
In an expected manner, Katie jumped with joy and called her caseworker that she was coming to the hospital. Katie was about to take the first big step in her miraculous journey.
Katie calls her mother
Adopting a child or taking him in for longer-term placement was going to be an arduous task. “I called my mother and requested her to stay with me for the next few months to make this happen,” Katie said.
Katie’s mother instantly agreed and moved in with her for a couple of months. Next up was adoption and another step towards a shocking discovery.
The adoption
Just 24 hours later, Katie and her mother walked out of the hospital with a 4-year-old baby boy in their hands. He had drug exposure, but was not showing signs of withdrawal.
Katie’s journey of being a foster mother took a major turn at this very moment but she had no clue that this was only the first of many turns that her life was about to take.
Naming him
The infant didn’t have any name at that moment and was just named ‘baby boy’ because his mother left him in the hospital without even giving that poor child a name.
“I didn’t ponder too much on names and decided to give him my top choice ‘Grayson’ because by Lord Almighty’s grace, I now had a son (potentially for forever).” Katie was overjoyed with emotions.
The search
Katie was trying with all her might to search for Grayson’s biological parents. She enquired in the hospital about details of his actual parents.
She even posted ads in local newspapers and other media outlets. Even though she wanted to take care of Grayson all his life, she also wanted to find his biological parents.
No one turned up
Despite trying her best, she wasn’t able to trace his actual parents. All the information that she could source from the hospital, led to a dead end.
No one replied to the ads posted by her either. “I was kind of relieved at the same moment because he would be mine forever with no opposition at all.” Katie felt mixed feelings. What happened next will make your heart warm.
Legally became Grayson
She was a bit sad that no one turned up at Grayson’s termination hearing but she also knew that the door was wide open for her to legally adopt Grayson.
“Finally, when he turned 11 months old, he legally became Grayson. And at the same time, I legally became his mother.” Katie was overjoyed but she had no idea that destiny had a lot more in store for her.
Grayson’s condition
Grayson’s biological mother was a consumer of methamphetamine and that has had quite adverse effects on his health.
“Grayson suffered both physically and developmentally from his drug exposure.” Katie explained his health condition.
Katie kept denying all the requests
Looking at Grayson’s condition, Katie had to take tough measures to ensure that he grows up to be a normal child.
“I kept on denying all the requests because I decided that I will have to wait for Grayson to turn at least a year and half before I could take in more longer-term placements.” Katie explained why she had to take this firm decision.
Call from caseworker
Almost two weeks later after the adoption, Katie received a call from her caseworker. The caseworker informed her that there was another four-day-old baby that needed an emergency placement.
Even though she decided not to take any more kids under her supervision, she felt like keenly listening to what the caseworker had to say. This call was about to change Katie’s life… and Grayson’s as well!
Same hospital, same condition
The caseworker informed her that this new kid was a baby girl and she was from the same hospital where Grayson was abandoned.
Moreover, the caseworker also informed Katie that the baby girl had drug exposure too. Katie could sense that something was different about this case. She was partly right because a miracle patiently awaited her.
Baby girl arrives at her home
“I could feel my heart skipping several beats at a time. I was overwhelmed but something was telling me to go ahead with it.” Katie explained the thought process that went behind before she took the decision.
Almost 4 hours later, a baby girl arrived at Katie’s home to accompany Grayson in his adventures but it was more than just that.
The Young Woman
Katie had to take the help of a young woman who decided to stay with her. “I needed some assistance to figure out how to manage two babies, getting donations for the baby girl, and to set up meal trains.” She explained.
The young woman too, didn’t have any clue that she and Katie were about to experience something miraculous!
Same mother name
When Katie observed the baby girl’s bracelet, she noticed something very odd. The first name of the baby girl’s mother matched the name Grayson’s mother had given to the hospital.
Katie then resorted to finding out more about the baby girl’s mother. After closely inspecting all the documents, it was revealed that the date of birth was only one day different than Grayson’s mother's!
Could they have the same mother?
This discovery baffled Katie and that young woman both as they kept scratching their heads. The possibility was less but even in this modern-day and age, miracles do happen!
Katie and her roommate looked at each other and then Katie exclaimed “Could they have the same mother because they have the same name and then the birthdate thing as well!”
Irish twins
It was a hard pill to swallow because as far as general conception goes, they should look alike but Grayson was half African American with beautiful darker skin and dark curly hair while the baby girl had a pale white skin tone with straight red-blonde hair.
A few hours late, Katie found that there was something called Irish twins as well!
Katie digs more information
Katie got quick on her feet and started assembling all the information she could lay her hands on. She wanted to find all the information she could to unravel the mystery.
She even pushed the intake worker about whatever details she was allowed to reveal about the baby girl. Her search was about to bear fruit as a huge surprise awaited her.
Interested biological mother
It was soon revealed that her biological mother was interested in visits and wanted to regain custody of the baby girl.
Katie also got to know that she had multiple other children, some of which had recently been adopted in a neighboring county. She was able to determine there was a time frame between the mother’s last two known children.
Could she be Grayson’s biological mother too?
Katie kept thinking about the possibility of baby girl’s biological mother also being the actual mother of Grayson. Life was playing its cards in a rather mysterious manner.
She was beyond nervous because chances were, she could get to meet the mother of her adopted son whom she thought was lost forever!
Their meeting
“As I was riding the elevator up, I was shaking because I didn’t know what was in store for me.” Katie explained.
She immediately scanned the room looking for potential mothers. When Katie first saw the woman, she was instantly sure that she was looking at her own son’s actual mother!
Enquiry about her other children
After some small talk, Katie asked about how many children did the woman have. She had one more child than the county was aware of.
And as it turned out, the missing child in the county’s records was a boy! Katie didn’t reveal the truth about her adopting Grayson because she wanted to be 100% sure about it.
100% sure
Katie wanted to unravel this mystery and this crazy miracle and wanted to be 100% sure. She requested her caseworker to dig a little more as he was about to meet their biological mother.
“I am 100% sure because we ust found the last name she gave with Grayson’s birth for a relative of Baby Girl” The caseworker confirmed that Grayson and the baby girl were indeed siblings!
Katie’s reaction
She cried right in the middle of the job-site office as she hung up the phone. She was extremely overjoyed by the feeling of taking care of two lovely children that turned out to be biological siblings!
“The Lord Almighty had this plan all along but I had no idea this was what he had in mind!” exclaimed Katie with joy!
A sheer miracle
Katie’s head was abuzz with a lot of possible scenarios and questions. “What if I had said no? What if Baby Girl had gone to another family? What if I had said yes to one of the other placements I had been asked to take just days before?” Katie kept thinking.
If that would have been this case, they would have never found her or Grayson’s mother and the connection would have never been made! It was a sheer miracle to say the least!
Another foster child
On December 28, 2018, Hannah joined their family forever and Grayson’s story had forever been impacted for the better now that he had another partner in crime that will forever be a part of his life.
If you think that their adventurous journey came to an end here only, you are dead wrong. Because 13 months after Hannah was born their birth mother welcomed another baby boy into this world and guess what? Katie, after fostering the child, legally adopted him as well!
Happy family
At one point in time, Katie had to brace the impact of a divorce. She was literally lost in her life. So much so that she used to cry looking at herself in the mirror. She even bought a big home and got a new job but something was still missing from her life.
That something came in spades and how! After she became a foster mother, Grayson barged into her life and convinced her to adopt him forever. From then on, miracles kept happening as she went ahead to adopt yet another baby girl, who, miraculously turned out to be Grayson’s sibling. And then, the third kid came as a cherry on top. They live as a happy family now and Katie is having a gala of a time, taking care of her three adopted children who are actual siblings!
Life is rather mysterious
We have actually no idea what life has in store for us. Miracles do happen because life has its own mysterious ways to put things in place. But for good things to happen to us, we have to be kind and noble.
Maybe Katie received all the happiness in the world because she decided to make abandoned children’s life better by becoming a foster mother. When she first became a foster mother, she wouldn’t have thought even in her wildest dreams that she will be adopting three children in near future who would turn out to be actual siblings! Well, that’s life!
