Michael Phelps finishes second in semis, advances to 200m fly finals

Michael Phelps finished second in the men's 200-meter butterfly semifinal at the 2016 Olympics with a time of one minute and 54.12 seconds Monday night. Hungary's Tamas Kenderesi finished first in one minute and 53.96 seconds, while another Hungarian in Laszlo Cseh was third at one minute and 55.18 seconds. They'll all swim for the gold medal in the final on Tuesday night. There was no doubt about Phelps' level of focus prior to this race. Television cameras showed the American in the midst of an intense stare minutes before the start while rival Chad le Clos got loose in front of him. le Clos beat Phelps in the 200m butterfly final at the 2012 Olympics. Now they're set for another showdown on Tuesday with le Clos finishing fourth. In the preliminary heats on Sunday afternoon, Phelps finished in one minute and 55.73 seconds to earn fifth place among all swimmers. Kenderesi and Cseh were in the top two spots, while le Clos finished third and Australia's Grant Irvine finished fourth. No other Americans advanced past the preliminary heats. American Tom Shields finished 20th overall and failed to advance to the semis. Phelps has already won three Olympic medals in this event. He won back-to-back gold medals in 2004 and 2008, then added a silver in 2012 when he finished behind le Clos. He's also held the world record since 2009, when he posted a time of one minute and 51.1 seconds at the 2009 World Championships. Nobody has come close to that time in Rio. The most decorated Olympian in history has already added to his total this year. Phelps won his record 19th Olympic gold medal Sunday night as part of the U.S. team in the the men's 4x100m freestyle relay. His stellar second leg helped put the Americans ahead before Nathan Adrian closed it out in the final leg to hold off France and Australia.
