When Rob and his wife Patricia decided to go on a vacation with the kids, they had no idea what they were in for.
Their little summer adventure would end in a disaster...
The Beginning
The family bought some snacks and got onto their boat. They wanted to enjoy some warm weather before summer ended, and their children would have to go back to school.
Their plan for the afternoon was to catch some fish and have a barbecue.
A Catch
Suddenly, their daughter let out a peep as she saw something. Whatever she caught looked massive.
Rob had no idea what it was, and neither did his wife.
Duffle Bag
Rob and Patricia hoped it was the swordfish they wanted to have for dinner that day.
They rushed to help the little girl to pull it out. And when they finally managed to get it on board, they discovered it was just a duffle bag. But what they found inside the bag shocked them to the core.
Opening The Bag
Rob's wife distracted the kids while he carefully opened the duffle bag. It was pretty heavy.
He began to peel back the layers of tape and saw a green pattern with a very familiar image.
Money
"Omg!" the kids screamed. "It's cash!"
They began pulling out stacks of 20-dollar bills, one after another. They've now got enough money to pay off their car. But that wasn't all that was hidden inside the mysterious bag.
"Call The Cops!"
Rob picked up one of the solid blocks, and his jaw dropped when he discovered what was inside.
“Honey, call the cops,” he told Patricia.
Bad Feeling
He discovered a bag of uncut and cut diamonds. Rob had a bad feeling about this. Something wasn't right.
But his kids thought it was pretty amazing. They wanted to take this treasure home.
Can't Keep It
Rob's daughter began to list all the things she would like to buy with the cash while her parents worried they had just left fingerprints or contaminated evidence.
They knew they couldn't keep the money.
The Police Arrives
Their children begged them to keep the cash or at least take some of it, but Rob and his wife didn't give in.
It didn't take long for the authorities to show up. But would they get in trouble for touching the bag?
Not In Trouble
The police officers asked Rob to give a statement and supply fingerprints for their files.
They weren't in any trouble. The officers said they were free to leave and wished them a nice day. But who did the bag belong to?
No Owner In Sight
The authorities still haven't located the owner of the duffle bag.
They believe whoever was dumped in the ocean might have been involved in criminal activity.
Not Happy
The bag was then taken to the police station for further investigation.
The children, however, weren't happy with their parents' decision. They wanted to keep the treasure.
Upset
"Why can't we keep the bag?" their daughter asked. "We could go shopping with all this cash!"
The little girl was upset and didn't understand why her parents decided to call the police. "Because it's not ours," Rob explained. "We don't know where this money and diamonds came from."
Important Lesson
It took a few days for the little girl to calm down and let it go. That day, she learned an important lesson on honesty. If you take something that doesn't belong to you, it's stealing.
