It’s almost commonplace to see headlines about Hollywood divorces. Celebrity marriages have a stigma of not lasting very long, and the public almost expects that to be the case for every Hollywood marriage. However, there are some celebrity couples that have experienced everlasting, strong marriages to this day. The marriages here have stood the test of time in one of the most non-hospitable climates there is – Hollywood. While love is common to find in film and television, it is not usually the case that it sticks around because you have found “the one”. Many actors and musicians find love on set as they are working long hours with other beautiful people. It makes sense that there is a bond that forms and chemistry that is undeniable – that is the point of putting two actors together in the first place. But it seems that a lot of Hollywood gets those emotions mixed up with the real world and that is when it all gets dicey. Now, while the end of relationships and marriages in Hollywood happens far more than does not, there are couple who have proven everyone wrong, especially the couples that both parties are actors and are as successful as can be. We are happy to see these successful marriages continue to flourish despite it all, and were surprised to learn just how long these couples are actually together, it seems almost impossible!
Jerry Stiller & Anne Meara: 61 Years
Jerry Stiller may be best known for his roles on Seinfeld and The King of Queens, but more importantly, he has one of the longest lasting marriages in Hollywood. The couple met in 1953 and then married just a year later (which back then was considered actually waiting quite a bit). The couple began working together in various nightclubs in New York City and became extremely popular. The couple is also well known for their actor and comedian son Ben Stiller. Sadly, Anne passed away of natural causes in 2015, which ended their 61-year streak. Despite Anne’s passing, however, this couple was together for life.
Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward: 50 Years
Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward met in 1953 when they were cast in the same film together (we told you it happens like that in Hollywood all the time!). They fell in love and eventually got married five years later, in 1958. Throughout their marriage, they continued to work on films together. Along with their acting careers, they raised six children together, three of which were from Newman’s previous marriage. When asked about their marriage dynamic, Woodward told reporters, “Sexiness wears thin after a while and beauty fades, but to be married to a man who makes you laugh every day, ah, that’s a real treat.”
Mel Brooks & Anne Bancroft: 41 Years
Legendary actor and director, Mel Brooks, met Anne Bancroft during her television rehearsal for The Perry Como Show when he introduced himself to her. They eventually got married in 1964 at New York City Hall and raised Brooks’ three kids from his previous marriage together, as well as shared a son together that they named Max. The couple co-starred in films together throughout their marriage, which included To Be and Not To Be, Blazing Saddles and Dracula. To be as massively successful as these two takes a lot of hard work, and they did as much of it on their marriage to make it last.
George Burns & Gracie Allen: 38 Years
This comedy duo started working together in 1922 where Burns played the “straight man” and Allen was given some comedic lines. They worked for four straight years together before Burns and Allen finally got hitched in 1926. They went on to have two children together and become one of the most beloved couples in Hollywood during their era. It is hard to imagine a couple better suited for that time, but it seemed easier to match up in Hollywood back then as the media was not at all what it is today – perhaps the paparazzi should be listed as a cause for divorce?
Merryl Streep & Don Grummer: 38 Years
After Streep’s boyfriend and ‘Godfather’ star John Cazale passed away from cancer, she moved into her brother’s friend’s house, which happened to be Don Grummer. Instead of it being a temporary stay, the two began to bond and she never left. Within six months of meeting each other, the two married in 1978. Since their marriage, the couple raised four kids together, and their relationship continues to be as strong as ever. Meryl has since seen her daughters also enter the acting world and go into their own marriages. She and Don maintain their marriage by keeping everything they go through as private as they can.
Johnny Cash & June Carter: 35 Years
Though Cash was married to his first wife Vivian at the time, he met June Carter while touring in 1956. While they shared a deep connection, Carter did not want to get involved with someone who was deep into drugs, as Cash had a serious addiction to drugs at the time. June also had personal conflicts of her own as she went through two failed marriages herself. After years of making music together and touring, John and June eventually married in 1968. They continued to make records and hit wonders together during their 35 years of marriage, that suddenly came to an end. June passed away in 2003 from surgical complications. A few months later, Johnny died from diabetes. Their love story is played out in the award winning film Walk the Line starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon.
Danny Devito & Rhea Perlman: 34 Years
Their relationship began when Rhea Perlman went to see a friend perform in a play called The Shrinking Bride, which happened to also have a special star – Danny DeVito. Two weeks after the play, the couple moved in together and eventually married in 1982. While having successful acting careers, DeVito and Perlman raised three children together. Although they seemed to remain strong for the duration of their 30-year marriage, Danny and Rhea announced that they were separating back in 2012. The two are still together, though, as they have not officially divorced and are working on their relationship. Everyone is entitled to their ups and downs!
Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson: 34 Years
Tom Hanks started off his career in the 1980’s while still married to his college sweetheart and raising two children. Hanks was satisfied with the direction his life was going in, but then came along actress Rita Wilson. The two met while Hanks was starring in the film Bosom Buddies and Wilson was a guest star for an episode. The actors shared great chemistry, but it wasn’t entirely easy at first. Tom was still married and raising two children at a young age, which was the biggest issue. Hanks later left his wife and went public with his relationship with Wilson in 1986. They married two years later, had two kids, and raised their mixed family.
Denzel Washington & Pauletta Washington: 33 Years
Denzel and Pauletta met in 1983 on the set of the television show Wilma and eventually married one year later. They raised four kids together, and it appears that they did something right because all four of them are college graduates. When asked about his successful marriage, Denzel said, “I don’t know if its show business that has a monopoly on divorce, it’s just that you hear about it,” he said. ” I just think that you have to work at it– not give up on each other. It’s a commitment. It’s not all the honeymoon, it doesn’t last forever, so you work at it. And hopefully, you’re friends first. that might help.”
Keith Richards & Patti Hansen: 33 Years
In 1973, while celebrating her 23rd birthday at Studio 54, Patti Hansen met the love of her life – Keith Richards. Although Hansen was not completely drawn to Richards during their first meeting, they connected nine months later and they fell in love. The couple married in 1983 and have since raised six kids together. It is very uncommon for those in the rock and roll genre to remain married, but Keith sure did and knew exactly what he had and how to cherish it. Again, the older rock generation had a better idea of love than this one does, for sure.
Kurt Russell & Goldie Hawn: 33 Years
While the couple is not legally married, they have been a couple for 33 years so we think that entitles them to be on this list. The two first met in 1968 on the set of ‘The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band’, but they did not become romantically involved until 1983. Although they have an age difference of 14 years and have officially never married, the couple is one of the most beloved in Hollywood. They are still together today and are often seen vacationing together wherever their hearts desire. They are very close with their children and keep to themselves.
Jamie Lee Curtis & Christopher Guest: 32 Years
While Jamie Lee Curtis first got her groundbreaking role in the film Halloween and has had a successful acting career ever since, she celebrates 32 years of marriage of as one of her greatest accomplishment. Jamie saw a photo of her husband before she ever met him. Christopher was featured in a magazine that Jamie happened across and immediately told her friend that he was going to be her husband. Needless to say, Jamie got her way and after a very short time dating, they got married. She knew right then and there that he was the one for her.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus & Brad Hall: 30 Years
Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Brad Hall both share a passion for theatrical arts, and as fate would have it, they both attended Northwestern University and met at a comedy troupe hall. After a few years of young love, they both became cast members on Saturday Night Live in 1982. While the two primarily took on different films roles after their stint on SNL, they maintained a strong bond and ended up raising two sons together. Most recently, Julia faced a health crisis that brought attention to her personal life. Julia has always had Brad by her side and in this case it was no different.
Mark Harmon & Pam Dawber: 29 Years
Both Harmon and Dawber have successful careers in acting. The two met through a mutual friend and married just one year after first meeting. The two actors are not particularly vocal about their relationship, but they claim they do not need to be because of how happy they already are together. The two continue to have strong acting careers and raise their two kids together. Mark is known for his NCIS gig and is considered a television icon since he has managed to keep a career in television alive as much as he has. He was also in films like Freaky Friday alongside Jamie Lee Curtis.
Kevin Bacon & Kyra Sedgwick: 29 Years
This Hollywood power couple met in 1988 on the set of the film Lemon Sky. Later that same year, the love birds got married and soon after had two children together. Kyra and Kevin have maintained strong acting careers in Hollywood and even starred in several films together, including Loverboy and The Woodsman. It is very uncommon for actors of this caliber to remain together throughout what Hollywood send their way, but they have never flinched or wavered in their love for one another. Their daughter is also looking into acting now – you think they will support it considering the fact that they have been in the industry so long?
Michael J. Fox & Tracy Pollan: 28 Years
Ironically, the two played roles where they were boyfriend and girlfriend in the television series Family Ties, but little did they know they would be married years down the road. Michael and Tracy have four children together while Fox continued his busy career. Unfortunately, in 1999, Michael was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. The couple continues to raise awareness about the disease and even started the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Tracy has remained by Michael’s side through it all and is the loving wife one hopes to have when going through such scary health crises. Keep it coming!
John Travolta & Kelly Preston: 25 Years
John and Kelly met while filming the movie The Experts in 1989. Soon after, in 1991, the couple married. They followed up their wedding by having their two older children. Over the years, the couple has faced a lot of controversy over their shared religion and have also seen tragedy when their eldest son passed away. They welcomed their youngest son, Benjamin, years later and have managed to see it all through together as a couple that seems even stronger than before. Whatever their secret sauce is for a last marriage, they are not sharing with us and definitely should!
David Bowie & Iman: 24 Years
With his charm and talent, it is no wonder David Bowie was able to win over Somalian supermodel Iman. They first met at a dinner party in 1990, and they eventually married two years later. They raised two kids over the duration of their marriage and remained strong for their entire 24 years together. Bowie sadly passed away in 2016, which makes their love a lasting one with their vows meaning everything to them up until the end. Iman has expressed her grief over her husband’s death, as well as gratitude to his fans for their unwavering love for him and his music.
Tim McGraw & Faith Hill: 20 Years
Due to the fact that both of these stars are some of the most famous country singers of all time, it is almost too perfect that they ended up together. Tim and Faith became a couple after a country music tour featured both on them in 1996. They hit it off quickly and got married in October of that year. The two have remained strong ever since, and they have plenty of duets to back up their strong marriage. They welcomed children together and have gone through a career metamorphosis in that they are still relevant today. Tim and Faith also seem to be more in love than ever.
David Beckham & Victoria Beckham: 18 Years
David and Victoria were a match made in soccer and music heaven. The two met in 1997, got engaged in 1998, and married in 1999 in a ceremony more similar to a coronation than a wedding in how lavish it was. They have since welcomed four children into the world and despite split rumors galore, they are still together and happier than ever according to their social media (which is always right, right?). Despite it all, this couple seems to be going nowhere unless they are together in it too. David is no longer playing soccer but is still revered for his years in the sport.
