40. House Fire
My grandmother lived by herself. She was wheelchair-bound and lived by herself. For years, we pleaded with her to come to move in with us. She said she didn’t want “to be a burden.” Then it’s seventh grade. I’m in my last class of the day.
I get this terrible feeling that Ma had just died in a house fire. Not 5 minutes later, my mom came to school to get me. I instantly knew why. I was right. Earlier that day, an electric fire had started at Ma’s house. Her dog got out, but she didn’t.
