Clive wanted to motivate his daughter Molly, so he promised to give her a few bucks for every exam she aced. As you can probably imagine, she was ecstatic!

Clive knew how stressed his daughter was for her GCSE exams. So, he gave Molly a proposition.
For every aced exam, she would receive some cash. Little did he know his words would soon backfire.

Molly soon became one of the best students in her class. She studied every day for her exams and dedicated her weekends to revision.
But not even Molly herself could've ever imagined what would happen that day.
Waiting For The Exam Results
It was Monday morning. Today was the day she would finally get her results!
Molly was nervous and excited at the same time. As she waited for the professor to call her name, she felt her anxiety creeping in.
She Aced All Of Her Exams
Finally, one of the teachers called out her name. "OMG!" she screamed out loud after reading her results.
She passed all 14 of her subjects with the highest grade. But then, suddenly, one of Molly's teachers walked up to her and asked to have a quick chat. What was going on?
Congratulations!
It turns out that Molly's teacher just wanted to congratulate her. "Your results are the best results the schools ever saw! Well done, Molly!" she told her.
Molly was so happy that she forgot to ask her friends about their results. Did they do well?
Her Friends Did Well Too
Her friends got great results too, but none of them did as well as Molly. "I'll see you tonight?" she asked one of her friends before parting ways.
"Yes, of course!" she shouted back. Molly couldn't wait to tell her dad about her exam results.
He Owed Her $1,722
"Good job, Molly!" her dad told her.
Clive promised to pay the girl $123 for every exam she aced. He now owed her a whopping $1,722!
He Fulfilled His Promise
Clive put the cheque in a blank envelope and gave it to Molly. "Congrats, darling, you earned it!" he said before giving her a big hug.
"Go on, open it!" he told her.
"Kidding!"
When Molly opened her dad's envelope, she nearly fainted. "Kidding!" he said. It was a joke!
While Molly was a bit upset, she saw it coming.
They Went Viral
Soon, their story got picked up by a local newspaper, and Molly and her father immediately went viral.

Not Everyone Agreed With Him
Not everyone thought that Clive's joke was funny, though. Most people said he should reward his daughter for her efforts like he promised he would.
"Money is an incentive. Just like anything in life – you know you have to work hard if you can see a great goal ahead," one person said.

Another person said, “Parents should motivate through showing their kids what they can achieve for themselves and others.”
But Clive wasn't the only one who tricked their child.
