Mom Follows GPS Down A Pedestrian Staircase

Good And Bad News

The pedestrian plaza was full of stunned townsfolk. Terror ran deep between them, people crying in their loved ones' arms while moms and dads tried to shield everyone from the chaos around them.

Before the police officer were skid marks from the vehicle that she'd been chasing. The car seemed to have veered all over the place, scarcely missing everyone. But that's where the good news stopped.

Amanda Speer

When Amanda Speer decided to join the force, she only wanted to serve and protect her town while fulfilling her childhood dream of becoming a police officer.

She gave the last twenty years of her life to this cause, making a name for herself as one of the best service people her town had ever known. But although she'd seen everything that came with the job, this incident would leave her far beyond speechless.

Twenty Years Of Service

Amanda had seen a lot in her two decades of service. She'd helped countless townsfolk in various situations, from assisting kids to cross the street to making high-priority arrests.

But what would happen that Saturday afternoon would be not only bizarre and hard to believe, but as a policewoman, Amanda would have to keep an open mind.

It Begins

The incident kicked off with a 2 PM call from dispatch while Amanda was on her patrol. A traffic camera had picked up a rogue truck, dangerously swerving across lanes on the highway leading to town.

Although the road was nearly filled with vehicles, the driver drove well above the speed limit. It wouldn't be long until something ugly happened.

Overspeeding

Overspeeding is among the biggest causes of road accidents. Many people get hurt, lose loved ones or even their lives because of a speeding vehicle each year.

Some of these unfortunate souls are usually caught in the collision, resulting in devastating physical and emotional damage that cannot be reversed. So you can only imagine how alarmed Amanda was when responding to the call.

A Day In The Job

Amanda had intercepted hundreds of speeding vehicles in her career, so this wasn't her first rodeo. She only hoped to get to the driver in time before something terrible happened.

She was halfway toward the traffic-ridden highway when dispatch made another alarming call, giving Amanda information that had her slamming down her accelerator in distress.

She Changes Route

"Dispatched informed us that the driver had just driven through the police department garage and taken a turn toward a pedestrian plaza," shared Amanda while talking about the incident.

Given that it was a Saturday afternoon, the plaza would be brimming with families looking to enjoy their day. Amanda couldn't start to imagine the danger they were all in.

Going Fast

Amanda's cruiser roared with power as her sirens came alive, clearing the road before her. She headed straight to the plaza, hoping her siren would at least warn the townsfolk of the impending danger.

It didn't take her long to reach her destination, and as fast as she could, Amanda hoped out of her vehicle to scope the area. What she saw had her sprinting forward.

Into The Plaza

The pedestrian plaza was full of stunned townsfolk. Terror ran deep between them, people crying in their loved ones' arms while moms and dads tried to shield everyone from the chaos around them.

Before Amanda were skid marks from the vehicle she had been chasing. The car seemed to have veered all over the place, scarcely missing everyone. But that's where the good news stopped.

A Miracle

Through some miracle, the people at the pedestrian plaza were unharmed. But in the distance, the back of a black SUV peeked out of a staircase that led out of the plaza.

Knowing it was the suspect, Amanda broke into a sprint, praying that whoever was behind the wheel was safe and sound. She had no clue what was awaiting her.

Helping Her

Amanda hurried to the vehicle, seeing it was caught between the stairs. She rushed to the door, lucky to find the window rolled down.

"Ma'am," she called out after seeing that the driver, the only person in the car, was a female. "Are you okay?" She pulled the door open and helped the woman out. "Are you alright?"

Out Of The Vehicle

The first thing that Amanda noticed about the woman was that her eyes were puffy with mascara smeared all over. Additionally, she reeked of alcohol.

Amanda got to work, checking if the woman was hurt. Seeing that she was alright, Amanda read her rights before arresting her. She'd soon discover why the woman was intoxicated but still driving a car.

Going To The Station

Amanda booked the woman in the police system before beginning her routine questions. It was then that she discovered the reason why the woman ended up at the staircase.

The 26-year-old driver drove through the plaza and onto the staircase because her vehicle's GPS had instructed her to do so. Amanda couldn't believe what she was hearing.

Her Husband

The woman maintained that she was following her car's GPS and trusted it to get her to her destination. But she'd already failed a drug test, which tainted the credibility of her story.

Digging into her background, the police discovered the woman was going through a tough time in her marriage. After a fight with her husband, she took his SUV for a drive, ending up in the staircase where Amanda found her.

Bonding Out

The police held the woman for two days, bringing her husband in for questioning. They recommended the two work on their issues before someone got hurt.

Of course, the woman left the station on bond afterward, with several charges such as driving under the influence and endangering civilians following her. It was miraculous that the incident left no one harmed, the woman included.
