Countries Where Americans Are Not Welcome

American tourists have gotten a bad reputation in many countries across the world for being brash, rude and arrogant. Even though not all Americans are guilty for these things, they have lead to negative receptions from these countries.

Some countries dislike American visitors because of their attitudes and behaviors, but in many countries, history has dictated many people’s perspectives. Whether due to political disputes from decades before or current beliefs, some countries just dislike the American government’s decisions.

Tunisia

Protests against the American government are frequent in the country of Tunisia, and this extends to the overall opinion of American citizens, too.

According to a study, less than half of Tunisians thought that Americans were good people.

Australia

According to a Pew Center Research survey conducted in 2017, about 48% of Australians expressed strong dissatisfaction to the way the United States is run.

This has mostly to do with a lack of gun laws in the U.S., which has lead to a general dislike of Americans in the country.

Norway

Norway is full of beautiful locations, but locals hate when Americans act like their country is a theme park for their own enjoyment.

Some tourists completely disrespect the land in the country by littering, walking into private residences and being nuisances.

China

The Chinese government is very controlling over its citizens, who are not allowed to speak negatively about their leaders.

So, native Chinese people find the American way of criticizing their politicians and other people of power frightening.

Greece

“Mamma Mia” probably wouldn’t look the same if it depicted how native Greeks actually feel about American visitors.

This dislike stems back to a Civil War in Greece in the 1940s that the American government involved themselves in.

Denmark

Americans who like to exclaim “we’re number one” aren’t always seen in a good light when traveling abroad.

As one Denmark native explained, "They feel better than the rest of the world, but in reality we are as good as they are.”

Canada

Even Canadians can show their less-than-friendly side when dealing with their closest neighboring country.

Dislike of the American government is common in Canada, with many citizens openly expressing their opinions in public.

Germany

Even Germany’s leader, Chancellor Angela Merkel have expressed distaste towards American points of view.

She once told a class of Harvard students that they needed to tear down their “walls of ignorance and narrow-mindedness.”

Austria

Austrian locals get annoyed by one common American practice: visiting American fast-food restaurants while traveling abroad.

They believe that tourists should at least visit some local spots instead of sticking to familiar choices.

Czech Republic

Natives of the Czech Republic get seriously peeved by American visitors who can’t even locate the country on the map.

Many Americans even believe that the country is located in Russia, much to the dismay of locals.

Brazil

Many Brazilian locations have become tourist attractions after being featured in movies.

But, after the release of the film “City of God,” many American tourists visited Brazilian slums to see the reality of poverty in Brazil, which lead a native to say, “Poverty and inequality shouldn’t be tourist attractions.”

Italy

Italy welcomes millions of American tourists each year who happily visit the historic sites of the European country.

But, natives actually find tourists’s lack of attempts to speak the native language rude and insulting.

Indonesia

American tourists have gotten a bad reputation in Indonesia for a practice called “beg-packing.” This involves people begging for cash to help fund their way back home or to another destination.

In Indonesia there are over 31 million people living in poverty, so this is considered an extremely rude thing to do.

Jordan

Many countries located in the Middle East have viewpoints that differ from Americans. The American government’s relationship with Israel lead many Jordan natives to take to the street in protest.

Therefore, American visitors aren’t welcomed happily.

Thailand

Visitors to the country filled with temples and other religious monuments, Thailand, may feel the rude stare of natives if they disrespect these sacred spaces.

Thailand natives take their religion very seriously, so no profane humor towards it is welcome.

India

India natives are also tired of American tourists using their country as a means to “find themselves.”

Prachi Vaity, a blogger based in Mumbai said, “India is a country, not a self-help book!”

Chile

American visitors to Chile today might not understand natives dislike of the foreigners, because it stems back to political conflicts that emerged in the ‘70s.

The American government lended a hand removing a Marxist president from power, with lead to a military coup.

England

English people are sometimes a bit more reserved than Americans, so they can quickly feel uneasy by tourists’ displays of loud, and often rude, arrogance.

And, doing your best John Lennon accent won’t get you any points with locals.

Ireland

Irish people are pretty understanding of American faux-pas to a point. They particularly dislike when tourists demand on using American currency while they’re visiting.

And, it’s not that difficult to exchange your currency when you’re visiting.

Scotland

When you’re talking to someone from Scotland, don’t try to imitate their accent.

This should go without saying, but almost anyone with an accent different from your own won’t appreciate the attempt whatsoever.

Belgium

Belgian people get particularly annoyed with Americans when they forget exactly where Belgium is located.

Some tourists even confuse the country with the German city of Berlin while their visiting, which couldn’t be more annoying to natives of the country.

Argentina

Argentinians really dislike when American visitors forget than Argentinians are Americans too!

The country is located in South America, so forgetting that fact makes any visitor seem a little ignorant.

Lebanon

Lebanon is currently a dangerous country to visit, with some areas being controlled by a U.S. deemed terrorist organization.

American visitors who take a trip here without knowing about current conflicts are a major nuisance to natives who are currently dealing with hardship.

Peru

Natives of Peru don’t necessarily dislike American citizens, but they do dislike the American government overall.

So, if an American travels to see the gorgeous natural landmarks of the area, they should probably keep their beliefs to themselves.

Russia

American visitors to Russia may not have many negative stories to tell, but the overall opinion of Americans is still very low in the country.

According to a Pew Research Center survey, about 52% of Russians feel negatively towards the U.S.
