Popular Word Game Saves 80-Year-Old Mom's Life

Against All Odds

She was in a situation she never thought she’d be in. She was stuck in a situation where she couldn’t get out, and it was at the hands of someone evil. She had no idea what would happen to her. Then an idea sparked in her head.

She knew she only had one hope now, and she prayed that her daughter would notice it. Against all odds, it would save her. Then she heard music to her ears, “Police, put your hands up!”

Gertrude Lee

Gertrude Lee lived her whole life in Florida. She lived a long, happy life full of exciting events and adventure. But now that she was 80 years old, she wanted to live a quieter life on her own.

She loved her children and grandchildren and would frequently update them as to how she was doing. But one day, when she didn’t do something that she normally did.

Favorite Game

Gertrude passed her time doing simple things, but her favorite of all is the popular word game called “Wordle.” The game would release a new word for her every day that she would try and guess.

Once she guessed her word and got her final score, she would always post it online for her children to see it. She’d compare her score with her family to see who had the best results.

Day Like Any Other

It started as a day like any other. Gertrude woke up early and put on the kettle for tea. She read the morning paper and put on her TV to watch her favorite shows under a blanket. Her daughter had introduced her to ‘Queen’s Gambit” on Netflix, and she couldn’t get enough of it.

She watched one or two episodes while sipping her tea and wondering what she could get up to. The only plan she had set in stone was doing her daily wordle score. But beyond that, she thought she might visit some of her friends for lunch. But she had no idea that her day would change drastically.

Making Plans

Gertrude messaged her old friends, asking them if she could pop round for lunch sometime in the afternoon. They messaged back, arranging it for her friend Mindy’s house. They replied with only one question, “What time would suit you best?”

Gertrude would get around to answering the question, but she first had to start her daily Wordle game. There was a new word of the day, and she was keen on trying to figure it out. But something would happen only moments later that would change her plans completely.

The Game

She took her time with the game. Even though it was digital, she enjoyed pulling out a notepad and a pen to try and figure out what the word was with educated guesses. She prided herself on getting a better score than any of her friends or her family members.

She figured out that the word had two vowels, “U” and “A.” Then it had a “T.” She smiled as she correctly worked out that the word was “aunt” and took a sip of her second cup of tea. But she had no idea that it would be this game that would save her.

A Call

Gertrude decided to call her daughter, Gina, to see how she was doing. The two had a short conversation about how their weeks were going. Gina complained about work while Gertrude, as any mother would, reassured her that it would get better.

Gertrude also told her daughter that she was going to post her Wordle score shortly. She didn’t know it yet, but that detail would save her life. In moments she would be the one that needed reassurance.

A Noise

Gertrude got off of the phone with her daughter and double-checked her Wordle answer to make sure it was right. She then input it into the game and prepared to post it on social media to show off.

But just as she was about to send the post, she heard a strange noise outside of her house. She thought about posting it, and a gut feeling told her not to. Instead, she walked to her phone to call her security company. Unfortunately, she wouldn’t be able to.

An Intruder

As Gertrude moved across the room to pick up her phone, as she got to her phone, she noticed movement out of the corner of her eye. To her horror, there was a man standing in her living room.

She stood there frozen in her tracks. She had no idea what the man wanted. Was he after money? Jewelry? All she knew was that she was in danger and had no one to help her since she lived alone.

Locking Her Up

The man told her to get into her bathroom. Gertrude could only listen to the man since he could easily overpower her if given a chance. When she got into the bathroom, he locked the door behind her.

With no way out, Gertrude heard him moving her bed in the hopes of finding a safe, or was he just sleeping in it while she was locked up? She just wanted him to take the money and get out. But the strangest thing would be her salvation in the end.

Couldn’t Get Out

She was in a situation she never thought she’d be in. She was stuck in a situation where she couldn’t get out, and it was at the hands of someone evil. She had no idea what would happen to her. Then an idea sparked in her head.

She knew she only had one hope now, and she prayed that her daughter would notice it. Against all odds, it would save her. Then she heard music to her ears, “Police, put your hands up!”

Savior

Gertrude heard a police officer shouting at the intruder. Tears welled up in her eyes as she realized what was going on. A few moments later, the door to where she was locked up swung open, and instead of the man, it was a man of the law.

He showed immediate concern and called EMS to arrive to take a look at her. She walked her to the ambulance, where they would check to make sure she was fine. She could only thank him over and over again.

Reason She Was Saved

Gertrude’s hunch was right. After she was saved, she asked the officer how he knew to check up on her. He smiled and told her that her daughter noticed that she hadn’t posted her daily Wordle results.

Gina thought it was strange that she hadn’t posted the results since she would normally do it every single day. It meant a lot to Gertrude, and she would never forget.

Calling For A Check-Up

Once Gina saw that her 80-year-old mother hadn’t posted the score, she called her, but she didn’t answer. Gina then called her friends, who told her she thought about making plans with them but never replied.

So Gina called the last number she wanted to, but she had to be sure that her mother was safe and sound. She called the police and asked them if they could check up on her just to be sure.

Safe

Gertrude suffered no long-term physical effects and was a little shaken for a while. But the important thing was that she was safe and sounded thanks to her quick thinking and the compassion of her daughter.

But Gertrude doesn’t regret a thing. She joked to Gina about having to check on her score now as a way of making sure she was okay. At the end
